Launching Session of QR code-enabled Payments in Jordan
In cooperation with the Central Bank of Jordan, JoPACC held a session to launch QR code-enabled payments in the Jordanian market in the presence of representatives from the financial sector, including banks, mobile payment service providers and payment system operators. The QR code is an emerging technology for transferring data that can be read automatically, quickly and easily by mobile phones and smart devices. It is recently used to facilitate and expedite financial transactions. The session was opened by Ms. Maha Bahou, JoPACC CEO, who gave a brief on the multiple uses of the QR code for payments and the approved standards to launch this service. JoPACC recently launched the standards for QR code-enabled payments, which are compliant with EMVCo® global standards. Ms. Maha tapped on global experiences in QR-enabled payments and highlighted efforts made to select a model that is compatible with the needs and capabilities of the local market as well as with national payment systems. A presentation followed by the Central Bank of Jordan on the regulatory aspects of this service, while stressing on the added value of using (QR) in payments and encouraging the sector to adopt this technology.
A discussion took place afterwards with the sector on the introduction of QR code for payments in Jordan to enhance offered financial services and increase customer acceptance, while adopting international standards. The attendees discussed the technical requirements of the service and how to expand its use in the local market to achieve its goals in facilitating financial services and increasing financial inclusion in the Kingdom.
